Population Growth Must Reduce A Sustainable Level To Ensure Sustainable Development
The Country representative at United Nations Population Fund UNFPA, DR. Barnaba Yisa is urging government to invest more in the Ghanaian population to ensure the population is an integral beneficiary of national developmental projects.
According to him, it is important for government to consider its demographic dividends in making informed decisions in raising the quality of life of Ghanaians.
Dr. Barnabas was speaking at a press briefing held earlier today to begin the commemoration of the 2022 world population day which will be held under the theme, “A world of 8 billion: Towards a resilient future for all – Harnessing Opportunities and ensuring rights and choices for all”.
Two population experts have spoken of the importance of Ghana reducing its population growth rate to a sustainable level to ensure sustainable socio-economic development.
The National Population Council (NPC) stated the annual addition of 700,000 to Ghana’s population posed a huge challenge to development, ensuring quality of life for the population and some national policies such as the Ghana beyond aid.
On her part, the Executive Director of the National Population Council, Dr. Leticia Appiah, called for intensified efforts from stakeholders and policy makers in reducing the rate of teenage pregnancy to help slow the increasing rate of Ghana’s population to a sustainable level for increased development.
