NUGS Name & Shame Public Universities Charging Unapproved Fees
As part of efforts of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) to force the hands of public tertiary institutions charging what they describe as illegal fees, the students union has called out these public universities.
NUGS named and shamed these public universities on Wednesday, December 28, 2022 at a press conference organized to address the issues.
Explaining the details of their agitations, President of NUGS, Dennis Appiah Larbi-Ampofo noted that despite the 15% increment threshold approved by parliament based on the Fees and Charges Act and communicated by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), some public universities have remained recalcitrant and are still charging exorbitant fees.
To buttress his claim, Dennis Appiah Ampofo mentioned that schools involved in this exorbitant and illegal charges are the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science & Technology (KNUST), University of Cape Coast (UCC), University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) and University of Education.
“KNUST has also increased fees by over 90%. UCC is also deeply involved, with some increment crossing 25%. As we speak, UCC Faculty of Social Science has increased its fees at a rate of 27% . University of Mines and Technology is also doing the same with increment as high as 40%,” he said.
He further revealed that the University of Education has also charged its freshmen an increment of 40%, while graduate fees have in some instances, increased up to 40%.
The President therefore reiterated that the students front will leave no stone unturned in their quest to ensure that these public universities rescind their decisions.
According to NUGS, it cannot fathom why with the current dire economic situation in the country, universities will add insult to the injury of parents and guardians.
