Motorcycle accidents leading cause of death in the Eastern Region – NRSA

The National Road Safety Authority has revealed that  motorcycle crashes led to more deaths in the Eastern Region in 2021.

According to the authority, it recorded a total of 471 fatalities through road accidents of which 41% were caused by motorcycles (bicycles, tricycles, motorbikes).

“We had 2,528 vehicles involved in the collisions of 1,507 crushes. 573 of these vehicles were in the motorcycle category and as any as 471 these were motor bikes.”

Statistics available indicates that last year, a total of 29,024 deaths resulted from 15,942 road crashes nationwide.

The Eastern Regional Director for the authority, Dennis Yeburi further noted that the region is third to the Greater Accra and the Ashanti regions who ranked 1st and 2nd respectively on the national chart for the year 2021.

Commercial vehicles reportedly killed 183 persons( 39%) whilst private vehicles also killed 96 persons (20%)

The Authority has noted of its continuous collaboration with other agencies like the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) and the Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate (MTTD) to ensure stronger enforcement of traffic regulations in order to curb road crashes.
