Youth & Sports Ministry launches National Fitness Day to promote healthy living and forge community unity

Based on the saying that “a healthy nation is a happy nation”, the Ministry of Youth and Sports has launched an initiative to promote fitness and good community relations across the country.

The initiative, dubbed “National Fitness Day” was out-doored at the Media Centre at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday, August 19, 2022.

According to the Minister for Youth and Sports, Hon. Mustapha Ussif, the initiative is primarily in response to calls made by Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia advocating for the need to promote communal fitness, physical & mental health across the country.

The Minister explained that sedentary lifestyle which is linked to numerous health issues are increasing in the world which Ghana is not an exception. Moreover, levels of physical activity required by the body to maintain good health are not been adhered to hence the surge in non-communicable diseases.

Sedentary lifestyles appear to be increasingly widespread in many nations despite being linked to a range of chronic health conditions,” the Minister said.

He added that “physical inactivity levels are rising in many countries with major health complications particularly the prevalence of non-communicable diseases.”

Speaking on other importance of the National Fitness Day, the Minister noted that the initiative apart from the health benefits it will inure to the entire nation, will forge communal unity, promote good community relations among residents of various communities and promote community sports and recreation among other benefits.

He further revealed the National Fitness Day will be observed be on the second Saturday of every month throughout the country with the maiden edition scheduled to take place on September, 10, 2022.

“We, therefore, invite colleagues, friends in the public and in the private sector, the diplomatic board, development partners, and civil service organizations to come into partnership with this laudable program. We especially call on sports associations and organisations to promote the fitness day,” the Sports Minister said.

Other institutions such as the National Sports Authority, headed by the Director-General, Prof. Peter Twumasi, the Ministry of Education, Decathlon among others lauded the Ministry for Sports for the initiative and therefore pledge their support to ensure the success of the National Fitness Day.
