‘It’s like we are living beyond our means’ – Some Ghanaians lament current cost of living

Georgina Darkwa used to go to the Madina market in Accra with about GHC 300 for her weekly shopping, but now, the situation has changed drastically.

With GHC 1,000 she is unable to afford the same things she used to buy with GHC 300.
She says it is okay for things to increase as the days go by but the rate of increase should not be this wide.

“The rate at which it’s rising is too much. Your monthly pay is not even enough for your daily upkeep, so it’s like you’re living beyond your means,” she told Mx24 News.

Another consumer, Kojo, not his real name, says as a family man, giving GHC 500 for ‘chop money’ should have been enough for the week but now, “they will go and it’s just not enough.”

Ekua Kakraba is well advanced in age and so would rather send her caretakers than go to the market herself but she also tells Mx24 News that “if I send them with GHC 200, they will bring nothing.”

She hopes that something can be done about the current situation although she “wouldn’t blame anyone for what is happening.”
