Four Ports Constructed in the Western Region Under President Akufo-Addo – Regional Minister Touts Unprecedented Achievements of Gov’t
As part of efforts to bring to light the share of the Western Region in the distribution of the national cake under President Akufo-Addo, Western Regional Minister, Hon. Kwabena Okyere Darko Mensah has disclosed that the region has benefitted from four ports constructed by the current government.
These port infrastructure according to the Minister, is unprecedented in the history of the region and adding that these ports are currently boosting socio-economic activities in the region.
The Minister touted this development and many others on Wednesday, November 16, 2022 when he took his turn at the Ministry of Information’s routine State of the Regions Report to enumerate government interventions in the Western Region.
Addressing the media, Hon. Kwabena Okyere Darko Mensah noted the construction of an automated oil jetty at Takoradi Port and another modern container terminal also at the Takoradi Port.
He also mentioned the construction of a Forward Operating Base (FOB) at Ezinlibo in Jomoro by the Ministry of Defence. He added that this facility comes along with accommodation facilities that can cater for a minimum of 2000 personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces. According to the minister, the project is 36percent complete.
“Apart from that the civilian population will be added and definitely it might go to about 5000 to 10,000. So we are virtually creating a new city here.” the Regional Minister remarked.
Hon. Kwabena Okyere Darko Mensah also touted the construction of Fishing Harbour and Landing Beach at Axim and Dixcove. He added that these projects include a fish market, net mending, cold room, warehouse, Day Care Centre, Administration, Washroom, Power Room among others.
The Axim project, according to the Minister has been opened to the fisherfolks to use as the finishing works on the ancilliary aspects of the project continues. He was also optimistic that the project will be commissioned during the next visit of President Akufo-Addo.
“Under Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, we have been able to do four ports in the Western Region. This is very unprecedented. We all know that Dr. Kwame Nkrumah did the Sekondi Naval Base and we also know that the white people in 1928 did the Takoradi Port. Under Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, we have gotten another port inside the Takoradi Harbour which is the Atlantic Port Service with the private sector. It is like the MPS that we have in Tema so we have a port like that,” the regional minister indicated.
Commenting on sea defence infrastructures, the minister noted that in order to protect the people living along the coastal lines in the region from the ravages of the sea, five sea defence projects have been constructed under leadership of President Akufo-Addo.
“We have done the Axim Sea Defence, we have done the Amanful-Kuma Sea Defence, we have done the Aboadze Sea Defence, we have done the Adjoa Sea Defence and the Funkoe Sea Defence….. to save lives and properties,” Kwabena Okyere Darko Mensah remarked.
