Empower more women to engage in mining – Small Scale Miners Association

The National Women’s Coordinator of the Ghana National Association of Small- Scale Miners, Victoria Adobea Guerrieri has called for support for women in the mining for them to excel in the industry.

She said the contribution of women in the mining industry cannot be downplayed hence the need to empower them to do more.

She made the comment at the 3rd Sub regional quarterly meeting for Women in Mining of West Africa, (WIMOWA) held in Accra on Thursday November 10.

“For women we have challenges of getting minable lands, we are not empowering women enough to be in the mining space, we also have a problem with funding and support” she said.

On her part, the president of  Women in Mining, (WiM) Ghana, Dr Georgette Barnes Sakyi-Addo touched on the lack of data on women in the mining sector in Africa as one of the major challenges facing the  sector.

“Today we had this session for WIMOWA and continuously we have seen that the issues are very similar, and we see that the non-availability of data is a major problem, you could tell from all of the countries that there is a challenge when it comes to data gathering”

“But how many women are actually in the mining sector, how many are in large-scale, small-scale mining, how many women are living in communities affected by mining?” she asked.

She further noted that, the exercise is basically for Women in the mining sector to establish a kind of baseline of where they are, what they are doing, where they want to go and how to get there.

On the issue of the fight against illegal mining known as galamsey in Ghana, Dr. Georgette Barnes Sakyi- Addo said the best way to win is to champion responsible mining.
