EduWatch against semester system for basic, secondary schools
Education policy think tank, Africa Education Watch (EduWatch) has registered its opposition to the newly-introduced semester system in basic schools.
The Ghana Education Service (GES) has indicated that the new system for public Kindergarten, Primary, and Junior High Schools has come to stay.
With the new system, pupils will be in school for twenty weeks per semester with a ten day break in between.
According to EduWatch, the semester system is a by-product of the double track system and not any “proven, unsurmountable challenges with the 3-term system.”
Thus, “it is only logical that the semester system leaves along with the Double Track.”
EduWatch further denied claims that it had been engaged during consultations leading to the introduction of the semester system. Warning that making such a move without exhaustive and extensive stakeholder consultation could spell doom for the country’s education system. Citing the three years vs. four years SHS tango during the Kufour-Mills era.
