COVID-19: Ghana records 509 new cases

Ghana has recorded 509 new COVID-19 cases with over 2,000 active cases.

After months of low records of active cases, the country has seen a steep rise in infections. Current active cases stand at 2,428.

This is a dramatic increase from the 1,301 cases shown on the Ghana Health Services portal 24 hours ago.

There are concerns that this spike has something to do with the virus’ Omicron variant after two cases were confirmed at the Kotoka International Airport three weeks ago.

However, officials at the Ghana Health Service insist the variant is not within communities.

The Greater Accra Region leads in cumulative infections with some 72,364 cases out of the 133,555 total confirmed cases. Ashanti and Western Regions follow with 20,815 and 7,551 cases respectively.

Regions with the lowest infections are Upper West, North East and Savannah.
