Arm of 1 year-old rotting away due to alleged medical negligence
Lydia Dagadu, the mother of a one year-old boy is seeking justice for her baby whose right arm is rotting away due to what she describes as negligence on the part of medical officers at St. Dominic Hospital, Akwatia.
The baby boy, a twin was admitted to the facility on November 31, 2021, for treatment of childhood hernia. According to the nursing mother, a cannula was poorly inserted which led to swelling of her son’s hand.
The condition reportedly worsened over the next few days while on admission at the hospital but urgent attention was not paid to the baby. He was subsequently discharged on December 31, 2021, without the intended surgery performed nor treatment of the cannula infection.
An abscess soon developed on the hand.
She tells MX24 News, she returned to the hospital to complain about the worsening condition but management refused to hear her.
She then mobilised her family members, about nine of them and stormed the hospital in hopes of getting some resolve but the Administrator of St. Dominic Hospital, Rev. Father Kenneth Abban who represented the hospital failed to admit negligence nor offer any further treatment.
Lydia Dagadu, the mother, is therefore calling on the Ghana Health Service, the Ministry of Health and government to intervene in her case to seek justice for her baby.
