Acute water shortage hits parts of the Northern Region
Parts of the Tamale Metropolis and Sagnarigu Municipality in the Northern Region has been hard hit by acute water shortage as the only dam serving the people is completely dried up.
Desperate residents have one of two options; to walk miles in search of potable water or share the lone dugout with livestock, which only causes them to fall ill.
For those who have some money to spare, they have to spend up to Ghc25 every day to purchase water from private individuals.
Residents tell MX24 News’ Simon Unyan, women who choose the first option return home to angry husbands because of the duration of the journey. This has led to the break down of some marriages.
Abdul Razak, a resident of Tamale noted that “the water crisis is creating unnecessary disagreement in our marital homes. When our spouses return late from going in search of water, conflicts come up and angry wives pack out. We are losing our wives.” he stated.
They are therefore calling on the government and other benevolent organizations to come to their aid.
The Assemblyman for the Fuo- SSNIT Electoral Area, Abdul Abdallah said several complaints to get authorities in the area to fix the problem have proven futile.
Mr. Abdallah further appealed to government and the Sagnarigu Municipal Assembly to get the contractor back to the site to desilt the dam as the rainy season approaches.
