2022 World Cup: Ghana sweating on Joe Wollacott’s injury

Ghana are holding their breath over Joe Wollacott’s fitness after the star picked up an injury during the warm up of their 3-3 League One draw against Burton Albion.

The 26-year-old suffered the injury before kick-off and was replaced by Craig MacGillivray at Pirelli Stadium Princess Way.

Charlie Kirk’s brace put The Addicks 2-0 up but Burton responded through Deji Oshilaja, Tom Hamer and Victor Adeboyejo to lead. But Jesurun Rak-Sakyi levelled with 14 minutes left to earn the Addicks a draw.

“He caught the end of his finger in the warm-up. He’ll get scanned as soon as we get back down to London,” Garner told Charlton TV as quoted by the club’s official website after the game.

“We’re hoping and praying that it is nothing because he’s due to fly out to the World Cup tomorrow [Sunday].”

Wollacott’s injury will be a great concern for Ghana coach Otto Addo who is set to name his final squad for the World Cup on Monday.

The goalkeeper was included in the 55-man provisional squad for the global showpiece.

Black Stars have been drawn in Group H alongside Portugal, South Korea and Uruguay.

Ghana will take on Portugal in their first game on November 24 before playing South Korea and Uruguay on November 28 and December 2 respectively.
