2021 AFCON: Andre Ayew confident Ghana will qualify to round of 16 despite Morocco defeat
Ghana skipper Andre Ayew is optimistic that Black Stars will advance to the round of 16 stage in the ongoing 2021 Africa Cup of Nations despite suffering defeat in their opening game.
Sofiane Boufa’s lone strike for Morocco in the 82nd minute sealed a 1-0 win over Milovan Rajevac’s side at the Ahmadou Ahidjo stadium on Monday.
Ghana will need to beat Gabon, who defeated Comoros 1-0 in the other group game to stand a chance of progressing to the next stage of the competition.
“It is a disappointing way to lose a game and concede a goal in the last five minutes but it is the first game. We need to look at our mistakes and do much more,” the 31-year-old said after the game.
“We have two matches left and I am confident that we will qualify from the group. We believe in ourselves and we believe in what we can do.”
Rennes winger, Kamaldeen Sulemana was one of the standout players for Ghana against Morocco and Ayew believes the 19-year-old will play a key role for the team at his first AFCON tournament.
“He is a great talent and he has great quality and I believe he will help us a lot in the tournament,” the Al Sadd forward added.
